Late 90s Chan, before she got sober, and her messy, moody, melodic sound and cute haircuts wooed us into her web. HUMANIST RECORDS on Chelsea Wolfe, 2/3/11; “Chelsea Wolfe rather takes her inspiration from the darkness than the light; she, then, transcends the usual aesthetic representations that are inherent to this kind of music. She creates a very inspired imaginative world where ghosts of night and ghosts of dream meet. When there is light, it is secretive, ephemeral, vulnerable, so you had better catch it. After all, her music resembles some kind of stormy, fascinating dark folk imbued by a psychedelic, lo-fi atmosphere of coldness and warmth. A music that is rare, peculiar and precious that we are utterly proud to expose in France. ” – Read it here…

FIXIN’ THE CHARTS calls Chelsea Wolfe one of the best new acts for 2011, 1/1/11; “Imagine if Laura Palmer had picked up a guitar and formed a band rather than turned to drugs and prostitution and you might expect it to sound a little like this. Almost as Doomed as the aforementioned TV Legend, It’s a dark, beautiful, beguiling and unpleasant experience recalling last years sublime albums from No Joy or Tamaryn with a haunting pop shriek we are all hoping PJ Harvey is going to return with… It is the music of the dark cold night, of a world you’ve always hoped didn’t exist, that you’ve seen in the corner of your eye, that you’ve had nightmares about… but without exception a beautiful nightmare? An early contender for best new act of 2011.” – Read it here…

SF WEEKLY on Chelsea Wolfe’s sound, 2/24/10; “It’s goth, yes. Church bells, rain sounds, moaning, drone. But Chelsea Wolfe’s music manages to avoid the pitfalls of her particularly cliché-ridden genre, making her sonically more kindred to Bat for Lashes than Sisters of Mercy.. Looping, chanting, sampling, and other traditions of the pale set serve Wolfe well, but in truth, it’s her fine singing, guitar playing, and songwriting that resonate. A deep experimental curiosity sets her apart from other kids with guitars.” – Read it here…

CVLT NATION posts a stellar, nearly poetic review and haunting photo essay of Chelsea Wolfe’s recent performance at the Echoplex, 2/6/12; “For a show whose patrons spanned the gap between typical artsy LA twenty-somethings and steely-eyed metal vets, all were equally ensnared by the band’s spellbinding doom folk offerings – a sea of eager eyes, receptive minds and attentive ears.” – Read it here…

SF WEEKLY reviews Chelsea Wolfe’s September 2nd performance at The Elbo Room; “People arrived and left based on the set time of headliner Chelsea Wolfe, who easily stole the show with a moody live performance of her retro-gothic material — imagine a mixture of Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, My Bloody Valentine, and a little bit of Acid King.” – Read more here…

COOKING WITH SATAN reviews Chelsea Wolfe’s August 17th NYC show, 8/19/11; “I don’t know if… if her music is goth, witch house, brutal death or christian rap and I don’t really care actually. It looks stunning and sounds awesome. In short: just fucking amazing.”- Read it here…

CVLT NATION reviews Chelsea Wolfe’s show at Bottom of the Hill, 7/23/11; “Chelsea Wolfe has an impressive vocal range and sounds like no one but herself. She had no problem matching and expanding upon her vocal performances on record. The band played other selections from Grime such as “Noorus” and my personal favorite “Moses.” I was particularly impressed by guitarist Kevin Dockter. He was able to take the relatively simple and straightforward guitar parts and contort them into the jagged and noisy soundscapes found on the record. His use of slide on electric guitar was especially intriguing. Dylan Fujioka did an excellent job of providing meticulous drumming, and bassist/keyboardist Ben Chisholm…helped fill out the songs and bring them to their full potential.” – Read it here…

PRETEND ORPHANS reviews Chelsea’s show at Bottom of the Hill, 7/23/11; “Chelsea Wolfe, the person and the band, seduced us with deceivingly beautiful soundscapes before drowning it all out with ferocious feedback – leaving us with conflicted emotions and ringing ears. The night could have ended with their set and it would have been worth the hike out to the Hill.” – Read it here…

7X7 reviews Chelsea Wolfe’s show at Cafe du Nord on 3/1/11; “The doom and glorious gloom of the black-veiled goth chanteuse set the bar high for the entire night of the show…Her crystalline alto pipes, in the vein of Zola Jesus, are encased by scratchy guitars, droning keyboards and howling drums; music perfect on dark, rainy days or if you ever find yourself inhabiting a cave.”- Read it here…

I LISTEN, SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO reviews Chelsea Wolfe’s show at Cafe du Nord on 3/1/11; “Confident in herself and her excellent band, a band that complimented their mistress without ever trying to overshadow her, she proved that she could recreate her recorded sound on stage. The music sounded exactly like it does on my headphones and her voice proved to have more range than I even thought possible.” – Read it here…

L.A. RECORD reviews Chelsea Wolfe at Show Cave, 2/25/11; “Wolfe cuts a ghoulish figure on stage, craning forward into her microphones, clutching a black guitar, singing through a veil, she rocks with the storminess of a premature widow. Her presence is so hypnotic that when her last song ends, the audience can barely believe it, and demands an encore, which she provides happily, gloomily.” – Read it here…

MISHKA NY reviews Chelsea Wolfe’s release party for The Grime and The Glow, 2/20/11; “The Pendu posse recently took their talents over to the left coast for an awesome party in support of Chelsea Wolfe‘s recent LP release. Celebrating Chelsea’s The Grime and the Glow, out now on Pendu Records, the performance featured her and a host of other artists and DJ’s. Judging by these photos, it was quite a time. Chelsea Wolfe and her gauzy head apparel seem to be in full effect, and she got some serious support from King Dude, The Present Moment, and DJ sets from WhITCH, Robert Disaro, and Todd Pendu himself. Be on the lookout for any party that these guys throw, they’re pretty much a guaranteed great time, and check out some more pictures below.” – Read it here…

EXAMINER reviews Chelsea Wolfe show at Crocker Art Museum, 12/18/10; “California-based Chelsea Wolfe performed at Crocker Art Museum on Thursday for the museum’s monthly “Playlist” series. Wolfe, who has recently relocated to LA from Sacramento with her bandmate and boyfriend Ben Chisholm, performed songs from her EP “Ἀποκάλυψις”, her new LP, “The Grime and the Glow,” and several songs from her latest project “Russian Karaoke.” The venue was a small stage in a small auditorium inside the museum. There was plenty of room to move around and shoot from any angle, but the lighting was stationary and very dim. The low lighting matched the vibe of the music (“melancholy”) and there were bright images being projected on the wall behind the performers.” – Read it here…

SACRAMENTO PRESS reviews Chelsea Wolfe’s show at the Crocker Art Museum, 12/17/10; “The room’s silence soon shifted to an echo of stripped minor chords and her pristine voice, like a siren, harmonically corralled through a cloud of souring notes and distortion. Her first wave of songs were a dedication, “for those with unnamed sorrows, dark knowledge, waiting to be remembered” and served a montage of melodies consciously chosen to set the mood, an ambiance just as beautiful as it was black.” – Read it here…

SEAN CARNAGE reviews Chelsea Wolfe’s performance at Pehrspace, 4/23/10; “Chelsea Wolfe and her band were even more solid and more transcendental than I imagined they would be. Others have mined this aesthetic and Chelsea Wolfe has made most of them irrelevant. She has superior songs and flawless execution. This was the real deal!” – Read it here…
